4 Questions to Ask Before You Buy Individual Dental Insurance

If you're in a hurry to get a dental plan, slow down.  Instead of signing up for the first individual dental insurance policy you see, do yourself a favor and get answers to these 4 questions first:

  1.  "Should I opt for a family plan instead?"

As great as individual dental insurance is, if you've got a wife and a house full of kids, a family dental plan is actually a better buy.  That way, all of you can work towards joint deductibles and out-of-pocket maximum payments.  You'll also get to take advantage of monthly premium payments that are lower per person than if you were to sign everyone up for their own personal dental insurance plan.

  2.  "What's excluded from this dental plan?"

Whether you buy family or individual dental insurance, you're going to have at least a few things that are excluded from your policy.  For example, cosmetic dentistry services are usually excluded on insurance policies because they're elective.

However, some insurance companies will try to save themselves money by excluding a ton of things that you might really need.  Unless you're comfortable footing the entire bill for the things that are excluded, don't sign on the dotted line.

  3. "Can you sell me eye insurance, too?"

If you're dealing with a big insurance company, you might be able to buy eye insurance to go along with your dental coverage.  In fact, it's a question that you definitely need to ask before you sign a contract.

    Why?

Buying dental and eye insurance together will entitle you to a loyalty discount -- meaning you'll get to save some money on your premiums every month.  In some cases, the savings can be so great that you'll be able to afford better coverage altogether!

If saving money is that important to you, you might want to look specifically for companies that offer both dental and eye insurance.

  4. "Is this an insurance company I can trust?"

No matter how many policies you buy from them, you need to feel like your insurance company is trustworthy.  After all, the last thing you need is to pay a bunch of money to a fly-by-night company -- and then be on your own when it comes time to pay for services and treatments.

Luckily, you can rest easy when you get a Delta Dental individual plan.  That's because Delta Dental has been in business for decades, and you can count on them to be in business for decades more.  With a Delta Dental individual plan, you'll have access to affordable rates, plenty of dentists to choose from, and great customer service.
